吾皇威武！2016年絕對是「King James」LeBron James大豐收的一年，繼「ESPY」年度卓越運動獎、《運動畫刊》年度最佳運動員後，James再度受頒為《美聯社》年度最佳男運動員。
James在此次票選中分別擊敗了奧運名將Michael Phelps以及Usain Bolt，水中最快的男人以及陸地上跑最快的男人分居第2、第3名，幫助芝加哥小熊破除「山羊魔咒」，終結108年冠軍荒的三壘手Kris Bryant獲第4名，至於去年此獎項得主Stephen Curry則名列第5。
為騎士帶來隊史首冠，終結了克里夫蘭52年的職業運動冠軍荒，並多次運用自己身為超級運動明星的影響力來對社會議題表態是James獲獎主因，他一共囊括了24張第一名選票。
James在2013年時也曾獲此殊榮，今年再度得獎讓他成為繼「籃球之神」Michael Jordan後第二位獲選此獎項2次以上的NBA球員，Jordan曾在1991至1993年連續三度獲此獎項。
